Let’s get started.
This handy cord comes in a large variety of colours and sizes which will make your new hobby even more enticing as you can easily customise it to suit your style and needs. From macrame wall hangings to pot plant hangers and wearable jewellery; macrame cord will be your go-to. Cotton is the preferred fibre of fibre artists due to its natural and sustainable qualities, variety of colours and usability. Macrame string is available in sizes from 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, right up to 20mm. You will have fun exploring the differences between them all and how you will use each and every one of them in your creative designs.
When beginning your macrame journey most prefer to explore 5mm String or 4mm Rope. Both are great beginner cords as they are thin enough to still provide nice details and design opportunities, but also thick enough that you can work up a significant amount of pattern in a good amount of time. If you choose to create with a 3mm string your work will take longer to create and will be more detailed, If you use a 5mm string your details will not be as refined yet it will be larger and faster to make. Once you work with these sizes you will decide what best suits you. If you want your work to include finer details and increased intricacies you may like to decrease the size of the cord you are using, opting for 2mm or 3mm string. If you wish to create larger macrame wall hangings you may prefer a 5mm cotton cord.
Me? I like to use both, you will too.
Macrame Cord is the generic, umbrella term used to describe all types of macrame cordage.
Macrame string is a 1 ply cord made up of around 70 fine, thin threads. These fine threads come together and are flawlessly twisted to create the final product, one strand of string. Macrame string is a smooth and soft product, it brushes out easily and will create a more refined finished product.
Macrame Rope is 3 (sometimes 4) stands of cotton string twisted together to create a rope effect. Rope looks visually different to string, and feels very different too. Rope is more durable than string, more robust and firmer to use.
A traditional textile craft that was used for form and function more than aesthetics in the 13th century when it was first documented, Macrame has evolved to encompass refined beauty and high-end fashion. The history of fibre art is incredibly inspiring, possibly you could use its dramatic and growth timeline to here to generate design ideas and continue to move it into the future. As seasoned macrame makers the team here at Mary Maker Studio are here to help you grow your creative confidence.
